Westview Secondary School
APRIL NEWSLETTER
April 1st, 2021
Learning Snapshot
- As a school, we pride ourselves on students being engaged in relevant, meaningful and real world learning. Below are examples of students engaged in learning by doing. Chemistry 11 students doing some lab work. Philosophy students debating whether Robin Hood was a hero or a villain. They are learning to form an opinion supported by evidence and then thoughtfully debate with someone with a different viewpoint & perspective. Foods 9/10 students had an afternoon to design a recipe and then make it, bake it and enjoy it. The light literally went on for our Skills Exploration 9/10 students while doing their electrical wiring unit. Law 12 students are finger printing evidence as they solve a crime. Lastly, Global Ed students are exploring social justice issues involving and related to Canada’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people. The last project for this unit includes a clothesline-style display of pictures, write ups, and small beaded red dresses in the front foyer honouring the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people.
Covid Information
- We continue to be so proud of how Westview students are following the Covid guidelines thus far this school year. There were recent changes announced in the province and in almost every case Westview was already following the new practices such as mask use in the classrooms, even while seated.
- The Ministry of Education in partnership with the BCCDC has launched a new website (LINK) to help students, parents, educators learn more about COVID-19 prevention in school
- The BC Centre for Disease Control has a helpful new online resource for B.C.’s education community. Built for parents, students, and school staff, the K-12 Schools and COVID-19 website has a wealth of valuable information including:
- Health and safety measures that have been put in place to prevent COVID-19 from spreading in schools
- Protocols when there is a positive COVID-19 case in a school
- Shareable resources, like a contact tracing infographic
- Quick links to tools like the COVID-19 Self Assessment Tool and the new K-12 Health Check app
Thanks to the Woodshop at Westview!
- A big thanks goes out to Mr. Strothotte and Ms. Redden in the woodshop, as they helped lead a group of staff and students in creating charcuterie boards for the White Dove Dinner, a fundraising effort for the Hospice Society. The boards were milled by the woodshop, dried, planed, sanded and finished and were an awesome addition to the fundraising efforts! The boards that we produced were used as serving plates for early registrants for the dinner. The event was held virtually with dinners being delivered to the homes of those who pre-bought them. Great work Westview!!
Student Scheduling for 2021-22
- Course Selection Verification Forms were printed on March 31st and given to students in their afternoon class. Students/parents are asked to review the sheet and if any changes are needed, to make note of the changes on the form and return it to the main office. Please include your email address on the form so that counsellors can contact you to follow up.
- A course that was requested may be removed already, due to low enrollment (for example, Comparative Cultures 12 or Family Studies 11/12).
- A reminder for students/parents, courses with a Y are “Alternates,” and will be used in case one of the primary does cannot be accommodated.
- If there are additional questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to one of the counsellors using the QR code to book an appointment. It is important for these forms to be as accurate as possible as the courses listed on the forms are the potential schedules for students in the 2021-2022 school year.
