NEWSLETTER #13
Nov. 16th, 2020
Weekly Summary
This week we conclude Quarter 1 with Tuesday, Nov. 17th being the last day of classes. Moving from an 8-class linear model to a quarter system where students take 2 classes for 10 weeks is a significant change, students have adapted very well. We surveyed students for feedback and there were both positive and negative comments. Many students said that being able to focus on just two classes was beneficial and particularly in elective classes the longer blocks have been helpful for project work. A student commented that “the quarter system allows a lot more focus to be put on current classes and I think it has highly improved my quality of work”. Students found the longer blocks to be the most significant challenge as well as having two academic courses in the same quarter. A student commented that, “if you can, have one elective and one academic course at the same time. This would be better than two elective/two academic”.
Students will have two days at home in between quarters. There is no school Wednesday, Nov. 18th and Thursday, Nov. 19th. The school is open those days and there are some students who will be at school by invitation of teachers, case managers or counsellors. Friday, Nov. 20th is the first day of Quarter 2. All students are expected to be in attendance.
This year there will not be our typical student conferences but we will publish four report cards, one after each quarter. The report card for Quarter 1 will be live on Monday, Nov. 23rd afternoon.
Staff & Program Profile: Mr. Strothotte
Mr. Strothotte is our woodworking teacher & ADST Department Head. He is pictured using a jointer for a charcuterie board project that is being made from wood milled here at Westview using his portable sawmill. This live edge charcuterie board is just one example of the projects students are creating here in the woodshop. Mr. Strothotte’s students have also designed and made, in collaboration with our metal shop, a 30 foot long live edge stand up work station for students that overlooks the Golden Ears. Mr. Strothotte’s classes also use a CNC and laser engraver to make incredible wood signs that we use as trophies and school signage. If you are interested in having a custom address sign made or a live edge table or mantel, send Mr. Strothotte an email – Andy_Strothotte@sd42.ca
