WSS Newsletter #12 (Nov 9, 2020)

Westview Secondary School NEWSLETTER #12
Nov. 9th, 2020

Weekly Summary

This past week many students completed their provincial Numeracy and Literacy Assessments! These are graduation requirements for all students, and many other students will be completing these as the year continues to unfold. Below are some images taken this past week. Ms. Salitra’s students where using our photo studio, known as StudioWest, for yearbook photos. Mr. Pickering’s senior foods classes where making homemade pasta noodles and then made Fettucini Alfredo and Garlic Bread. Ms. MacDonald’s English 9 students where making some amazing creations inspired by Métis beadwork.

This week, on Tuesday, all students will be viewing a virtual Remembrance Day ceremony. One of the most important tasks for schools is to help develop young people who are caring, respectful, empathetic and globally aware and therefore; Remembrance Day is as important today as it ever has been. Remembrance Day reminds us that the things we know and love about Canada – the freedom, the tolerance, the opportunities, and our equality – were fought for, so future generations could live in freedom and peace. The Canadians who went off to war in distant lands went in the belief that the values and beliefs enjoyed by Canadians were being threatened. They truly believed that “Without freedom there can be no ensuring peace and without peace no enduring freedom”. As a school and community we must remember because if we do not, the sacrifice of generations Canadian dating back to 1914 who fought and died for us will be meaningless. They died for us, for their families and friends, for traditions they cherished and a future they believed in; they died for Canada. The meaning of their sacrifice rests
with our remembrance; Canada today and our future is their monument.

The end of Quarter 1 is approaching with the last day of instruction November 17th. If you have questions regarding academic progress, on our school website is a staff directory for you to contact a teacher by email. This year there will not be our typical student conferences but we will publish four report cards, one after each quarter.
