Grade 8 “Link Crew” Orientation Day

WELCOME!

We are very excited that you will be attending Westview Secondary and we look forward to meeting you on Orientation Day.

As you may know, our school participates in the Link Crew Program, an organization whose sole purpose is to help grade 8s feel more comfortable as well as help them achieve success in their first year of high school.

The Link Crew Grade 8 orientation and transition program is designed to both welcome and support grade 8s by assigning them a senior student Link Leader as a mentor during this first year. This Link Leader is a responsible older student who was hand selected from a large pool of applicants and has met the qualifications of being a good role model and a positive leader on our campus.

Following is some information to let you know what you and your student can expect in advance of their Orientation Day on Thursday, September 1st (the week before school starts):

1. The Tuesday night before orientation your student will receive a phone call from their Link Crew Leader personally inviting your student to orientation day and giving the details of where to be and what time. The Leaders will be calling the primary phone number listed on file at the school. Please note – often students cannot reach their 8s, do not worry if your student doesn’t receive a phone call, we have a plan in place for them.

Here is a general outline of the information that will be relayed in the phone call:

• Your student will be expected to arrive for 9am and meet in the main gym foyer (do not worry, leaders will be around the school to help students find their way)
• Your student will be provided with a snack at 10:30am and a hotdog lunch at 1pm
• We encourage your student to mingle with others during their lunch before heading home to enjoy their weekend
• Schedules will not be available until the first day, September 6th, and lockers the first week

2. Your student is encouraged not to bring backpacks, purses or other like items as the day is quite active
3. Because the day is active, please make sure that your student wears comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement

This is a student only function so we encourage you to let your child attend on their own. We look forward to meeting your child on orientation day!
