Voices Carry: A Celebration of Story, Strength and Spirit
Thursday, Feb 4 6:30 – 9:30 pm at THSS (no cost)
Local speakers take the stage to tell their stories and participate in a question and answer panel addressing issues facing LGBTQ+ youth.
Intramurals: Junior Badminton schedule: the schedule has been rewritten and posted. Games will resume again today: Monday, February 1, at lunch
Reminder to Psychology 11 students of the guest speaker this morning during Y Block today in the Suddaby Room. It is optional but we hope to see you there!
Who is THSS’s Kindest Student?
Perhaps you know someone who is consistently kind to others, volunteers more than anyone you know, or has recently done an extraordinary act of kindness. Nominate them!
One student per grade will be chosen from all entries to receive the kindest title and a $20 Gift Card to Starbucks. This award will go to the most deserving students, not the students who have the most nominations. Forms and the submission box are in the office. Deadline for submissions is 2:30pm, Wednesday, Feb. 10th.
Youth Week Talent Show Auditions!
Youth Week is a provincial celebration of youth held annually in the first week of May. Students are invited to join in on the fun through at talent show held at the ACT Arts Centre on May 2.
Audition Dates: Thursday, March 24 or 31
Audition Times: 6:00 – 9:00 pm

Our final trip to Whistler is quickly approaching. If you are interested in coming to Whistler on February 27th to ski or board, please see Mr. Williams or Ms. Fischer to get a permission form
Order your THSS yearbook by the middle of February. Yearbooks are $55.00 and can be personalized at no extra charge
Thomas Haney Equestrian Academy 2016-17 applications are now being accepted. If you are a grade 9 student entering grade 10, and horses and riding define who you are, apply online. The online application is on the THSS school website. Information is also available at the Academy website at http://sevan8.wix.com/thequestrian-academy
Languages students: The next multi-cultural seminar is now posted in room 2145! Space is limited so sign up early! The seminar date is for Feb. 1 during Y block.
Grade 9 immunizations: February 10. Consent forms are due back to the THSS office by February 3rd.
Grade 9 students who have excellent attendance and who are passing all of their current courses are invited to sign up for FAST TRACK PLANNING 10. The free online course starts February 15th and must be completed by June 10th of this year. To apply simply pick up, complete and drop off an application form which are available in the counseling area. Applications deadline is Thursday, February 11th.
Earth Day Maple Ridge needs volunteers on Saturday, April 23. If you need volunteer hours or simply want to be involved, please come to the Career Centre for an application form.
Partnership Programs are now taking applications for next year: plumbing, hairdressing, carpentry, electrical, automotive, culinary, and metal fabrication. See us in the Career Centre.
Course Selection Assemblies will happen on the following dates during Y block:
Grade 10: February 22nd
Grade 11: February 29th
Counselors will visit English classrooms the week following each grade assembly to complete the course selection process. We hope to send course verifications home in the middle of May.
If you’re late arriving to school, please remember to sign in at the office. We need to know who’s in the building in case of emergency
Grade 12’s who would like to have a chance at being Thomas Haney Secondary’s nominee for the $5,000 BC Excellence Award, must visit the Ministry of Ed website to confirm they meet criteria at:

2016 Grads! Your Graduation fees are now available to be paid on the parent portal. Please pay these fees ASAP –
Cap & Gown $50 (mandatory fee if you are participating in the grad ceremony)
Dinner Dance at Meadow Gardens $60 per ticket (pay for two tickets if bringing a guest)
Dry Grad at Thomas Haney $30 per ticket (pay for two tickets if bringing a guest)
If you are unable to pay them on the portal – you can bring payment (either cheque payable to THSS or cash) to Mrs. Shamro in the office.
