Today’s Black History moment is about Viola Davis Desmond, who was born in Halifax in 1914. She ran a beauty parlour and beauty college. In 1946 she went to a movie, sitting on the ground floor which was designated for whites only. She was arrested and sentenced to 30 days in jail. In 2010 the province of Nova Scotia granted her an official apology and a pardon. Premier Darrell Dexter also apologized to Viola’s family and all Black Nova Scotians for the racism she was subjected to. In 2016, the Bank of Canada announced that Viola would be featured on the $10 bill, making her the first Canadian woman to be featured on Canadian money.
