Canada played a key role in the Underground Railroad, a network that helped enslaved Black people escape to freedom in the 1800s. Thousands risked their lives traveling north, often under cover of darkness, hoping to reach what was then British territory. Communities in Ontario, Nova Scotia, and elsewhere became places of refuge. While life in Canada was far from perfect, these journeys represent incredible courage and determination in the pursuit of freedom.
