Black Canadians have long advocated for equal access to education. From segregated schools in Nova Scotia and Ontario to modern efforts for equity, education has been central to the fight for opportunity. Today, Black educators, students, and families continue to push for learning environments where everyone can succeed.

Portia White was one of Canada’s greatest classical singers. Born in Nova Scotia, she achieved international success at a time when racism limited opportunities for Black performers. Her powerful voice and perseverance helped open doors for future generations and showed that talent deserves recognition—no matter who you are.
