Maple Ridge Secondary School is a dual-track English and French Immersion school offering a variety of educational programs and courses from Grades 8 to 12. Programs include advanced placement, honours courses, as well as second language courses in Spanish, Japanese, German, and French. The school offers technology-supported classes (iPad carts, labs). Also featured is a daily 40 minute FLEX block that allows students to choose their learning activity and location, promoting independence, ownership and personalization.
Unique Features
Early and late French Immersion programs allow students to complete their French Immersion education with an appropriate complement of courses. A Digital Arts Academy allows students to earn certificates in seven areas focusing on the use of computers to create artwork. The academy offers courses in digital art using Photoshop, 3D modelling and animation, special effects for film, desktop publishing, website design, multimedia programming for game development, contemporary music, music composition and sound engineering. Junior and senior level leadership classes, as well as peer tutoring, Best Buddies and Link Crew mentorship programs, are available.
Fine Arts
The school’s award-winning music program includes concert bands, jazz bands, concert choirs and vocal jazz. In addition, students have the opportunity to explore drama, directing and script development, guitar, art, ceramics and sculpture, graphic arts, film making, digital photography, media arts and film studies.
Applied Skills and Technology
A wide range of skill development courses are available and may be used towards a certificate program. The school has a professional standard teaching kitchen for its culinary arts programs as well a full range of foods, textiles, human services and family management courses. Additional courses include cabinet and furniture construction, automotive technology, metal work, metal fabrication, drafting and design, as well as the many courses offered within the Digital Art Academy.
Special Education
MRSS offers special education programs to fully meet the needs of all students. Available services include learning assistance, a gifted program, and regular tutorial sessions. Full-time counselling, aboriginal support and youth care worker services are also offered. A career centre assists students with post-secondary planning, work experience, and volunteer opportunities. ‘Alternate’ programs include Journey (ages 12-15) and Outreach (ages 16-19).
Athletics
MRSS has three gymnasiums, a full weight room, fitness centre, extensive outdoor fields and a competition track. Our Rambler teams are synonymous with champions: Fraser Valley; Provincial and National. Our many teams include Aquatics, Badminton, Ball Hockey, Basketball, Cheerleading, Cross Country, Field Hockey, Field Lacrosse, Golf, Intramurals, Rugby, Soccer, Track & Field, Volleyball, and Wrestling. The school also has a lacrosse box, tennis courts, competition track, weight room and wrestling room. Student yoga classes are also available.
Extra Curricular
MRSS offers a wide variety of extra-curricular clubs and activities, including Model United Nations, Intramurals, World Scholars, Outdoor Club, Fly Fishing, Chess Club, Strategic Games, American Sign Language, Spoken Word Society, Improv, Science Fair Club, HOPE (Helping Other People Everywhere) and Cabaret to name but a few!
