There are many exciting adventures waiting for you in grade 8. Encountering bigger hallways and bigger students, changing classes every period, juggling homework, and making new friends. Getting involved in clubs and teams is the best way to make connections with the school and you’ll make friends and have fun at the same time.
Grade 8 Orientation Days - September 3 & 4
First Day of School
Important Note: Due to the ever evolving guidelines regarding social distancing, our plan for these days might change.
On September 2 & 3 we will host an orientation day for grade 8s and we have big plans for you. We start the day at 9:00 am with an assembly. After the assembly, our LINK crew (senior mentoring students) take over with all kinds of events and orientation activities just for you. Also on this day, you will have your school photo taken. The day will run until about 2:30pm. (this is an approximate guess)
You’ll also be given your timetable and are welcome and encouraged to spend some time finding your classrooms once we are done.
Things to consider:
Plan to arrive by 8:45 a.m. and make your way to our main gym
Dress comfortably but appropriately for school

All of our publications and notifications are sent home electronically so it’s important to be signed up on the Parent Portal. Another excellent resource is our free planner app available from the App Store – it’s free and safe to download.
You can also find out what’s happening daily by following us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/MapleRidgeSS) and Twitter (@MRSSsd42) and never be out of touch.
We have moved to an app for our planner which has been hugely successful! All grade 8 students will be given a paper planner, however, we recommend that students and parents download the app.

On the first day of school, September 8, 2020, only students in grades 9-12 need to come to school. Because you’ve come to the orientation day the week before, GRADE 8 STUDENTS DO NOT ATTEND ON THIS DAY. If you were unable to attend, don’t worry, just come on Wednesday morning. Remember the warning bell rings at 8:25 with classes beginning at 8:30am. If you don’t have your schedule, come early to the office and we’ll give you a copy.
Regular classes begin on Wednesday, September 9 with a Day 3 schedule. This is the first day of classes for all students.
At MRSS we do not put out a list of school supplies for students. The essentials such as a binder filled with lined paper, subject dividers, pencils, pens, a ruler, highlighters, pencil crayons and a scientific calculator are the staples of school life and can be reused from previous years or purchased new – it’s up to you!
