Principal’s Post – October 2019

October 2019 Principal’s Post

When we met with students to start the school year, we identified three school-wide goals for the year:

  • build school culture and community
  • develop student leaders
  • celebrate excellence. We want to make sure we are not just talking about it. We are being about it.

As we finished September Mrs. Liversidge and Ms. Bahia, along with three senior students, attended the Canadian National Student Leadership Conference. We were the only school in Maple Ridge to have delegates attend and the students came back inspired and prepared to impact our school. Senior Leadership also organized and hosted our annual Terry Fox run which had a presentation by a cancer survivor and former Westview student as well as a 2.5km walk and 5km run. We had over 80 staff and students participate and raise awareness and donations for Cancer research to find a cure.

Breaking Down the Walls is a three-day school-wide event that included an all-school assembly on Monday and workshops on Tuesday and Wednesday for 300 students and 40 student leaders. The purpose of Breaking Down the Walls is to create a strong and connected school community of care as well as develop and identify student leaders. We are excited by the impact this will have on Westview.

Breaking Down the Walls also aligns with the Personal Awareness and Responsibility Core Competency from our new provincial curriculum. Why is personal awareness and responsibility so important to a child’s education? Personal awareness and responsibility is a core competency integrated into all areas of learning in the curriculum. When a student is personally aware and responsible, their sense of self-worth and confidence grow as they develop skills to ensure their well-being. Students learn how to set goals, regulate their emotions and stress, express their needs, and seek help when needed. When students understand how their choices affect their educational, emotional, and social well-being, they recognize that they have a personal responsibility for their future.

September also featured our school awards from last school year for students in grades nine through 12. We had 77 students receive recognition for their outstanding work as well as three significant awards for Junior and Senior Leadership, Service, Citizenship and Top Academic student in grades 10 & 11.

A reminder that every Tuesday and Thursday our Youth Care Worker, Mr. Whincup, serves a delicious hot breakfast for all students. It is FREE! Students can drop by the foods room to enjoy and start the day off right!

In athletics our Fall teams are off and running. This year we’ve added a cross-country team in addition to boys and girls volleyball.  Recently, our Senior girls’ field hockey team attended a tournament in Osoyoos and began league play last week. League play is also underway for our Junior and Senior boys soccer teams.

We encourage all students to be involved and connected at school in clubs, athletics or leadership. We provide information on our social media: Instagram, Twitter, our daily announcements and on our website.
