We are enjoying some chilly winter weather as we move into December.
The three weeks of December will go quickly for students. Some of the important dates that are listed below, include: a music concert featuring our Band & Choir as well an art show – the W Collective which will have student art to show and for sale.
December 17th our first report card is LIVE on the MyClass portal. We encourage all parents to read and discuss the report card with your son or daughter. If you need clarification about a report card mark, please contact the teacher of the class. All teacher emails can be found on the school website: https://secondary.sd42.ca/wss/ under the Parents Tab.
We encourage students to be active and involved in our schools. Our athletic teams had an excellent Fall of competition with our Field Hockey team travelling to Victoria and coming in 12th Place in the BC Provincial Championships. Our Sr. Boys Soccer won the North Valley League and our Volleyball program expanded to include 2 Boys Teams and 3 Girls teams. And finally, in sports, in Westview’s first year with a cross country team, two runners qualified for the BC Provincial championships. During the Winter Break, or Senior Boys Basketball team will be travelling to San Diego for one of the largest High School tourneys in the US – The Surf N’ Slam.
In November we had 24 leadership students attend We Day in Vancouver and reported that it was an amazing and inspiring day for them and they have plans to bring that energy and positive energy back to Westview.
Another way to be involved is by dropping into our weight room for some weights or cardio. The weight room is teacher-supervised and is open everyday after school for all students! There are huge benefits from working out – two of the most important benefits of fitness are you will make friends and feel great after.

The BC Redesigned Curriculum
What is the importance of formative assessment in the classroom?
There are two types of classroom assessment. Summative assessment provides information about student progress for reporting purposes. Formative assessment provides feedback that supports student achievement and moves student learning forward. Clear goals with timely feedback inform students of where they are and what their next steps need to be. Formative assessment is given through written or verbal feedback and does not involve grading. When students are encouraged to act on teacher feedback, they begin to take ownership of their learning. As teachers work to build community and encourage students to take risks with their learning, they understand that mistakes should be embraced as opportunities to become proficient learners. In this way, teaching and learning become cyclical, each informing the other to promote independent and lifelong learning.
