{"id":16117,"date":"2025-04-30T18:43:33","date_gmt":"2025-04-30T18:43:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/secondary.sd42.ca\/thss\/?p=16117"},"modified":"2025-04-30T18:43:51","modified_gmt":"2025-04-30T18:43:51","slug":"maple-ridge-and-pitt-meadows-students-learn-about-canadas-democratic-process","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/secondary.sd42.ca\/thss\/maple-ridge-and-pitt-meadows-students-learn-about-canadas-democratic-process\/","title":{"rendered":"Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows students learn about Canada\u2019s democratic process"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16118\" src=\"https:\/\/wordpress1.blob.core.windows.net\/thss\/2025\/04\/THSS-all-candidates-debate-15.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Students across the Maple Ridge \u2013 Pitt Meadows School District learned about government, the electoral process, and what it means firsthand to cast a vote in the lead-up to the 2025 federal election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that student involvement in politics and candidate debates at school is more than just important \u2013 it&#8217;s essential,\u201d said Parker McCambley, Grade 12 student and vice president of Thomas Haney Secondary\u2019s student council. \u201cThese opportunities help students develop their voices, understand the power of democracy, and become active, informed citizens both inside and outside of school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seven schools participated in <a href=\"https:\/\/studentvote.ca\/canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Student Vote<\/a>, an educational program and mock election coordinated by national charity CIVIX and Elections Canada to enhance civic education and engagement for school-aged youth.<\/p>\n<p>After learning about the different parties and platforms, students at Davie Jones Elementary, Harry Hooge Elementary, c\u0313\u0259sq\u0259nel\u0259 Elementary, Pitt Meadows Secondary, Westview Secondary, Garibaldi Secondary, and Thomas Haney Secondary cast their ballots in a mock vote that mirrors the real election in the riding.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Muriel Warne\u2019s Grade 1\/2\/3 class at Hammond Elementary created a portrait timeline of the country\u2019s prime ministers from Sir John A. Macdonald to Justin Trudeau.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18871\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sd42.ca\/assets\/media\/Timeline-of-prime-ministers.jpg\" alt=\"Timeline of prime ministers created by Hammond Elementary students.\" width=\"2047\" height=\"1453\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Students at Thomas Haney Secondary organized and held an all-candidates debate on April 23 to encourage civic engagement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was spectacular! We had over 150 students in attendance \u2013 a packed room!\u201d said Grade 12 student Reece Reichelt, president of the Thomas Haney student council. \u201cTons of students went away having learned more about our political climate as well as the various parties and their stance on issues that are important to students and young voters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe candidates even mentioned we had one of the best organized debates which, as co-organizer, was amazing to hear! Events like these are truly a stepping stone for getting students involved in the world around them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The questions Reichelt and co-organizer Parker McCambley asked the candidates during the panel were based on input from the students at Thomas Haney.
