{"id":10124,"date":"2013-10-15T20:27:23","date_gmt":"2013-10-15T20:27:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/schools.sd42.ca\/thss\/?p=56"},"modified":"2013-10-15T20:27:23","modified_gmt":"2013-10-15T20:27:23","slug":"october-2013-newsletter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/secondary.sd42.ca\/thss\/october-2013-newsletter\/","title":{"rendered":"October 2013 Newsletter"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Notes from the Principal, Sean Nosek<\/h2>\n<p>Once again, Thomas Haney kicked the school year off with an opening ceremony, replete with introductions of school staff, the reading of a student credo, and a guest appearance by our mascot Thor.<\/p>\n<p>The tone in our school is extremely positive, and we have already successfully launched many activities and events. \u00a0Our fall sports program is up and running, with three boys soccer teams, and FIVE girls volleyball teams.<\/p>\n<p>The level of student engagement at THSS is impressive. \u00a0Student Council, Random Acts of Kindness Club, \u00a0Eco Action Team, Leadership &#8211; all these groups have already been active and involved. \u00a0Under the leadership of Vice Principal Kristi Blakeway, our students raised over $3600 in honour of Terry Fox. \u00a0We hosted the first ever &#8220;ball drop&#8221; event, and students were very excited to have a hot air balloon here at school.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to our friends at Remax Western Canada for donating the balloon. \u00a0It was exciting to have the opportunity to go up in the balloon, and many of our students were fortunate to have the opportunity as well. \u00a0Thanks also to our PE department for coordinating the run.\u00a0 Bard on the Beach, The Great Shoreline Cleanup, and many more activities have also already taken place.<\/p>\n<p>Guest presenter Keith Hawkins spoke to our whole student body recently, and delivered an inspirational message around the power of community and working together. \u00a0 Stay tuned for many more cool events and happenings.<\/p>\n<p>As always, you are encouraged to connect with your child\u2019s TA, and to direct any subject specific queries to the appropriate teachers. Students who leave without signing out, will be considered truant and will be subject to disciplinary action.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Pre-Teen Hallowe&#8217;en at THSS Sightlines Theatre<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"margin: 10px\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/50513bf84f302fa2d888b964b\/images\/halloween_wallpaper_large005.1.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/>The Pre-Teen Hallowe\u2019en returns to the THSS Sightlines Theatre on Tue. Oct. 29 from 6:00-8:00 PM. Bring your little ghosts and goblins to this fun Hallowe\u2019en themed event -especially designed to be \u201clittle-kid\u201d friendly. Children will enjoy face-painting, a special Hallowe\u2019en movie cartoon (we bet you can guess which one!), a craft and treats. Be sure to come in costume. This event is most suitable for children aged 2-8 years but everyone is welcome. Children must be accompanied by someone over the age of 16. Admission is only $3.00 Tickets can be purchased at the door. \u00a0Event will take place in the Theatre and main Rotunda.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Photo Retakes<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"margin: 10px\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/50513bf84f302fa2d888b964b\/images\/retake_day.1.png\" width=\"299\" height=\"353\" \/>OCTOBER 9TH! \u00a0\u00a0If you already have had a photo package given to you THAT you do not like; please return the WHOLE package on retake day when having your picture taken.<br \/>\nAll students are required to have a student photograph taken as the student ID card produced has the student ID number bar-coded on it and is required to sign out resources from any of the kiosks or library. \u00a0There is NO COST FOR THIS ID CARD as it is included in the cost of your student fees. \u00a0It is also the Go Card for public transit. Grade 12&#8217;s who have received administration approval to drop a course must be taking at least 4 academic courses PLUS two other courses.<\/div>\n<h2>&#8216;THE HAPPENING&#8217; CRAFT FAIR AT THSS<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/50513bf84f302fa2d888b964b\/images\/Christmas_balls_and_ornaments_001006.1.jpg\" \/>This year\u2019s giant craft fair is scheduled for November 23rd \u00a0and 24th. \u00a0This Craft Fair has a history of being one of the finest in the Lower Mainland and with crafters coming from around the province, allows you an opportunity to get a good jump on your Christmas shopping. \u00a0On Saturday, the craft fair is open from 10 am &#8211; 4 pm, and on Sunday from 10 am &#8211; 4 pm. \u00a0Admission is $2.00. \u00a0A wonderful selection of items will be on display. \u00a0We would like to thank this year\u2019s jurors for helping in March&#8211;every year we get a better selection to offer the public. \u00a0 A daycare will be available, staffed by the school teams&#8211;no strollers are allowed on the sales floor so parents of young children should take advantage of this service. \u00a0Students will be on hand to direct traffic in the parking lot. \u00a0The school teams will be doing the site preparation. \u00a0 Thanks to all the people who have helped us already&#8211;we\u2019re looking forward to another successful year. \u00a0Monies raised at the craft fair help fund scholarships for youth and children\u2019s charities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/50513bf84f302fa2d888b964b\/images\/Favorite_Costumes_lead_in.1.png\" \/><\/div>\n<h2><strong>COSTUME CONTEST<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Students from all grades can enter our annual lunchtime costume contest for prizes and glory on Thursday, Oct. 31st!! \u00a0Let your imagination go!<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">ECO ACTION NEWS<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-Up Results!<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nThank you to students who participated in the Shoreline Clean-Up along the banks of the South\u00a0Alouette River. Most surprising were the amount of\u00a0cigarette butts\u00a0found (400) and balloon remnants\u00a0following a previous cleanup\u00a0the week before by\u00a0another group!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">THSS using Solar Cones<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nWaste reduction has always been the focus of the groups actions since its inception. In 2015 the GVRD will not longer accept food waste in its landfills. We are happy to continue our pilot project with the installation of 2 additional solar cones bringing it to 4. So far so good &#8230; as student\u00a0volunteers\u00a0compost\u00a0kitchen and lunch waste from the Rotunda.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">&#8216;Reduce, Reuse and Give Back&#8217;\u00a0THSS Annual Clothing Drive<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nSave your gently used clothing and donate\u00a0to the\u00a0THSS\u00a0NOVEMBER 16TH &#8211; DEC 16TH. \u00a0Acceptable\u00a0items include; pillows, blankets, sewing supplies,coats, shoes, purses, clothing, etc. \u00a0Any proceeds from the drive<br \/>\nare donated to a local charity in need. TA&#8217;s with the most full bags donated will win a prize!
