SUMMARY:Flat Iron Overnight Hike-In Alpine Camp
DESCRIPTION:For Environmental Science 11/12 and Outdoor Education 11/12 \nWelcome to the Applied Outdoor Ed Program at SRT. We would like to start the school year off with an overnight backcountry trek to Flat Iron Mountain in the Coquihalla Range on Friday\, September 25th to Saturday\, September 26th. \nDetails of this challenging hike: \nThe hike ascends from the parking lot of the Coquihalla Summit Rest area\, which is a 2 hour drive from SRT. \nThe trail is steep through the forest for the first 3.5 km – gaining over 750 meters in elevation during this first kms. \nThe trail then flattens out for a km while zig zagging over rock outcrops with beautiful sweeping views to surrounding mountains and valleys below. We continue another km to an area beside a small alpine lake to camp. The total elevation gain is 850m. \nThere are no facilities in this region. No outhouses or tables and no fires allowed. \nStudents will practice a pack in\, pack out model. Every aspect of this adventure will be focussed on respect for the environment we’re in. \nStudents will use classroom time to learn about the ecology of the sensitive area. They will pass through 4 biogeoclimatic zones on this 10.2 km round trip hike. \nStudents who have completed the classroom modules and have proven they understand backcountry safety\, environmental protection and hiking etiquette will be selected for the trip. \nWe will have to “create” a designated toilet area for students once at camp\, as there are no outhouses available. There is limited privacy from other backpackers\, as we will be in the alpine where trees and bushes are small and low. \nNo reservation is required to hike and stay overnight in this area\, which means we also have no control over what space will be available. There are several flat areas surrounding the small lake to set up tents. \nStudents will pack their own food and drinks and gear. They will be responsible for their own set up and take down of camp\, cooking all their meals\, keeping their area clean\, storing their food in a safe way to keep animals away. \nThe school has light weight tents\, small stoves\, pots/pans\, butane gas\, mattress pads\, sleeping bags and large backpacks to loan to students. They will be required to share tents in groups of 2 – 5 people. \nThere will be mandatory packing and preparedness classes that must not be missed. \nWe will all drive together in the SRT van and/or chaperone’s personal vehicle to and from the starting point. 2 hour drive each way. \nStudents must have decent hiking shoes or a solid pair of runners with grip and support. Poles are highly recommended. \nThis is an OPTIONAL trip to enhance the Outdoor Ed Program which is taught by Mr. Penacerrada and Mrs. Davies and the hiking portion will be facilitated and hosted by Ms. Tracy Adams (Education Assistant) and Mrs. Allison Wall (SRT vice principal). \nPlease communicate with your son or daughter before signing them up\, to ensure they want to go\, and have the capacity to carry a 35lb backpack up a steep mountain with various terrain features such as roots and rocks and slippery sections. This includes researching the area and understanding the challenges of the hike. There are 14 spots available\, so not everyone in the class will be able to attend. \nPlease note: Attendance on this trip is not graded\, and students will not lose marks if they are not able to attend. This is an optional learning experience\, and participation will not impact a student’s academic standing. \nThere is very limited cell reception. Weather conditions may vary but students must be prepared for cold weather and high winds. The area is exposed and stands at 2000m in elevation. Preparedness for alpine conditions is essential. \nIf a student falls ill or gets injured during the trip\, a certified Wilderness First Aid attendant will assess and create a plan to safely get the student to an area where parents could drive to pick them up or attend\, as needed. SUMMARY:Science 8 Grouse Mountain Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:As part of the science 8 biology and earth science unit\, all the grade 8 classes from both Day 1 and Day 2 will be going to Grouse Mountain on Monday\, October 5\, 2026. \nStudents will explore the BC temperate rainforest ecosystem and the geological formations of the coastal mountains\, examining both the scientific aspects and the connection to First Nations peoples and culture. The activities will encompass: \n\n1 Wildlife & Outdoor Education Session\n\n1 First Nations Culture Presentation\ngondola ride from the base of Grouse Mountain to the peak of Vancouver (the summit)\n\nMountain weather conditions can change quickly and are often unpredictable regardless of the time of year.  As a rule\, please prepare for all weather condition.  Appropriate clothing and good walking shoes is recommended as walking will be part of the activities.   \nStudents not attending the field trip will be required to attend school as they will have alternate assignments in lieu of attending the trip. SUMMARY:Senior Sail Grad Cruise
DESCRIPTION:This year’s grad class has the opportunity to participate in a Senior Sail Grad Cruise on Monday\, October 5th\, 2026.  The cruise is only open to grade 12 students from SRT.  This includes SRT students who are taking a trades program at another school\, but will be joining us in June for grad. \nStudents will be picked up at SRT at 3:30 p.m. by International Stage Line Coach and will be travel to Bayshore West Marina at 450 Denman Street in Vancouver. \nWe will be chartering a vessel through Spirit Cruises.  Students will board starting at 5:30 p.m. with a scheduled 6:00 p.m. departure and return to the marina at 9:00 p.m.  Students will leave the marina as soon as the coach is loaded and will return at approximately 10:20 p.m. \nProhibited Items and Boarding Expectations: \nTo ensure a safe and enjoyable Senior Sail for everyone\, students will be checked by SRT staff prior to boarding the bus.  Students must not bring any items that are prohibited on school grounds or school-sponsored trips\, including alcohol\, e-cigarettes/vapes\, or other prohibited substances or items. \nStudents will also be subject to screening by Spirit Cruise Lines staff prior to boarding the vessel.  Outside beverages are not permitted on board and smoking and vaping are prohibited during the duration of the cruise and on the bus to and from the marina. \nAny student found in possession of a prohibited item may be denied participation in the Senior Sail and may be subject to appropriate school consequences.  Students and families are asked to review these expectations carefully before attending. \nDuring this memorable three hour cruise\, students will be treated to a buffet dinner\, and dance the night away while cruising Vancouver’s scenic harbour. \nStudents would like this to be a formal event so dress in your best\, whatever that might be. Since you’ll be on the water and possibly outdoors (deck\, viewing harbour lights\, etc)\, it’s likely to feel cooler than it does on land inside. So even if the dinner venue is warm\, stepping outside will feel cold.
