{"id":169,"date":"2014-07-10T20:11:57","date_gmt":"2014-07-10T20:11:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/schools.sd42.ca\/pmss2\/?page_id=169"},"modified":"2022-02-03T22:36:38","modified_gmt":"2022-02-03T22:36:38","slug":"academic-honesty","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/secondary.sd42.ca\/pmss\/academic-honesty\/","title":{"rendered":"Academic Honesty"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>ACADEMIC HONESTY GUIDELINES<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Purpose<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Pitt Meadows Secondary School expects integrity, ethical conduct and intellectual and academic honesty of its students.\u00a0 This guideline outlines the procedure for addressing academic dishonesty, defines relevant terms, and identifies consequences of such dishonesty for the student.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Guideline Statement<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Academic dishonesty is not tolerated of students at Pitt Meadows Secondary School and will be treated as a serious offense.\u00a0 Academic dishonesty includes plagiarism, giving or receiving aid in an examination or where otherwise prohibited, or any other deceptive act in connection with work submitted to meet course or graduation requirements.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Definition of Terms<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Plagiarism:\u00a0 The formal presentation or submission of others\u2019 work, research, words, ideas, illustrations, or diagrams as one\u2019s own without explicit citation or credit.<\/p>\n<p>Cheating: The use or provision of unauthorized aids, assistance, or materials during examinations, in the preparation of assignments, or in the completion of work.\u00a0 This includes, but is not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>copying others\u2019 work in an examination;<\/li>\n<li>communicating work to others during an examination;<\/li>\n<li>submitting one\u2019s own work for more than one course without instructor permission;<\/li>\n<li>resubmitting work, in whole or in part, for which credit has already been granted;<\/li>\n<li>use of electronic devices during exams; or<\/li>\n<li>talking or communicating with others during exams, unless authorized by a teacher.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Encouraging Academic Honesty<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The teacher will clearly define expectations associated with academic honesty.\u00a0 The expectation of academic honesty does not imply that students must work, study and learn in isolation.\u00a0 Students are encouraged, both in and out of class, to work, study and learn together and to incorporate into their own exploration and analysis the work of others as found in books, journal articles, electronic media, interviews, private conversation and the like.\u00a0 Seeking out knowledge and integrating it will one\u2019s own work is integral to learning.\u00a0 Quotations, references and citations to the work of others, as well as acknowledgement of collaboration and citing of collaborators, ensure that all research is appropriately credited.<\/p>\n<p>Each teacher will evaluate each piece of work in the context of the course and the instructions given to students.\u00a0 Letter Grades are used to indicate a student\u2019s level of performance in relation to the expected learning outcomes.\u00a0 As such, teachers expect to assess the student\u2019s own work.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence of academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>student admission of plagiarism;<\/li>\n<li>instructor discovery of plagiarism;<\/li>\n<li>student admission of cheating;
