This letter follows a letter to Graduates and Parents distributed in a parent portal by Superintendent Sylvia Russell. This letter spoke to potential plans for a celebration for graduates at a time when it is safe, and appropriate. Our school staff welcomes this recognition.
Every school will be unique in the event they develop. As Garibaldi will not be repeating the “School Leaving Ceremony” but have had school level conversations to ensure a positive, family inclusive Commencement Event that highlights each grad in turn, allows for meaningful participation by every graduate, allows for the “toss of a cap” and finally provides a time for staff to reconnect with graduates. While we envision a ceremony and small reception, we will not be hosting a dinner dance or “prom” at any time.
To plan a Commencement Event, there are several elements that combine to create a complex set of planning requirements. We will need to ensure that graduates who have moved to continue their studies elsewhere will have the opportunity to return. We also need to ensure that the provincial health restrictions including social distancing are reduced to a level where we can all collect for handshakes, hugs, and group photos. We must remain honourable to the greater expectation of health for our community. We acknowledge that this will take time, as we will need to be in the last stage or Phase 4 of the published Restart BC Plan.
At this time it is too early to share a plan in detail. There is much work to do as a Province creating the healthy community that will support a meaningful event, safe for every member of the greater Garibaldi family to attend.
We will continue to communicate in the coming months, until then please be sure to complete the following questions, ASAP, on the GRAD 2020 tab of the GSS website to be certain that your answers are included in the virtual ceremony: https://gsscareercentre.wordpress.com/grad-2019/ We will be recording the 2020 School Leaving Ceremony next week.
Take care, be safe.
