Dear Class of 2021:
Over the past two weeks the Provincial Health Authority in connection with Fraser Health have worked to develop a set of criteria for 2021 Grad Ceremonies and events. In recent days a portal message from Superintendent Harry Dhillon has been sent out to outline some of these limitations. Posted here: https://secondary.sd42.ca/gss/superintendents-letter-to-2021-graduating-students-and-their-families/ As a school we know that graduation marks a significant milestone in the education of a child. It is the culmination of 13 years of dedication, and we want to meaningfully honour your child and their educational journey. We have developed a set of plans that support both the graduation formality and the expectations of the Provincial Health Authority. Nothing is more important than the health of those we love, however, graduation still matters.
School Leaving Ceremony: We will host a student only school leaving ceremony on June 10th in the afternoon. Exact time will be distributed, in time, to the students based on the yet to be determined student grouping restrictions. The Provincial Health Authority has expressed a preference for outside ceremonies. We will work to have a ceremony on the backfield using the Golden Ears as a backdrop. In the event of rain, we will move the ceremony inside. It is important to note that visitors and spectators are not welcome and cannot be accommodated, and, the location of the stage for the ceremony will prohibit anybody from attempting to view. Please respect our needs to have no spectators overseeing the ceremony. The complete ceremony will be edited and released on a secure district server similar to a YouTube video. The complete ceremony will include speeches such as the valedictorian address and will be well worth watching. The 2020 video was excellent and very well received. I have every expectation that this year’s will be just as good.
The weblink will be released via email in a Parent Portal message, approximately June 19th, 2021. It will contain all the elements of a school leaving ceremony, acknowledging each grad in the normal manner. It is important that graduates click on the following link to answer the questions as this will be used to create their introduction which will be read as they walk across the stage https://forms.office.com/r/b9WsPBsckD. If students would like to write their own introduction, there is also a place to write it in the form link. Your information should include any scholarship or bursary you have received as we are not necessarily contacted by the awarding institution.
Dinner, Dance and Dry Grad: These events are significantly affected by the current public health recommendations. No events are allowed in the province at this time.
Gown, Yearbook, Certificates and Composite Photo: Family/graduate photographs and yearbooks are a large part of the graduation tradition. Yearbooks, certificates, and the graduate composite photograph and ordered gowns can be picked up in June. A separate set of portal messages will cover these distributions.
Ms. Lemieux and I have reviewed each Quarter report card and know who meets the requirements to graduate and who may require additional support. Additionally, we are collaborating with your teachers on an on-going basis to determine expectations as we move forward in the school year. We have communicated with families of students who are in jeopardy of not graduating at this time.
I am excited that we can offer a small ceremony for students. I hope that the plans above give some opportunities for safe and meaningful celebration.
Please continue to monitor the school website, the Grad 2021 page, and Parent Portal for ongoing information. Please contact me directly, in email, if you have any questions.
